At the end of the 7th century, the Roman Church officially overtook Celtic Christianity, suppressing the Celt’s insistence on the holiness of the natural world. Images of Nature as sacred survived.

Central was the figure of the Green Man. He was half-man and half-vegetation, indicating the bond between man and nature, peering out from among gargoyles, church pediments and tavern signs. The leafy face of the Green Man suggests that the soul of nature looks not so very different from the human soul and that Nature’s soul is not less alive.
